My Hero

A great worker in Education

I give honor to a brilliant woman who most of her life working in education system in the United States. Mary L. Fifield, during all her carrier doesn’t work only for one category of social Class, but he allows me today as an immigrant and a part timer to have facility to go to college. As President of Bunker hill Community college since 1992, she said some words very significant to me who really interested in education system since the beginning. Community Colleges target students between Elementary School and High School, as she announced: “Community Colleges are a uniquely American invention. From their start as junior colleges in the early 1900s, these two-year institutions signaled a dramatic change that expanded educational opportunity from the affluent to the poorest and most disadvantaged among us. With the basic philosophy that everyone deserves the chance to go to college, immediately following World War II two-year colleges proliferated and made real the Truman Commission’s concept of a community college geographically accessible to all.” You can feel in her speech that the three words I bold came from her heart because until now, she still working to built Bunker Hill’s education better accessible to everybody.

If we did a retrospective on her pass, we will realize most of the time she worked for the community’s education. She was President of Harrisburg area Community College in Pennsylvania. She is a former member of the board and executive committee of the American Association of Community College. She was on the board of directors for the institute for Community College development, a state University of New York and Cornell University partnership. She also has several publications and articles about Community College, global workforce needs, and the value of diversities.

I don’t even need to mention all her carrier in private education, her service in Community College already proves how this fabulous woman cares about education. She gave all her heart and time working on, not only for herself or her family, but she gives the opportunity to everybody to get access. In her testimony on March 20, 2006, based on low income students, she explained some issues and the recommendations:

Issue

“According to the Education Commission of the States (ECS), more than 12 percent of the population lives below the poverty line…nearly 34 million people. These and other low income people have a little more than a 20 percent chance of going to college. For African-Americans and Latinos the percentage is lower. For low income students, the availability of financial aid becomes the deciding factor affecting college attendance. Yet increasingly, both static amounts of aid, such as the four year freeze of Pell Grants, and the policies governing eligibility of grants, such as the new Academic Competitiveness Grant, serve as disincentives to low-income students.”

Recommendations

“Break the four year freeze on funding for Pell Grants. Create Pell Grant eligibility for stand alone ESL programs. Revise policies governing Pell Grants so that grants for college are committed to students while they are still in middle and high school (the latter recommendation is a BHCC proposal only). Establish a sustained commitment to fund pre-college enrichment programs such as GEAR UP, Upward Bound and Talent Search. Provide incentives for dual enrollment programs to give high school students early familiarity with a college environment. Expand eligibility for the Academic Competitiveness Grant from exclusively full-time enrollment to include the two-thirds of community college students who are part-time.”

Issue

“Increasingly, federal grant opportunities for students are shifting from need-based to more exclusionary merit-based aid, while need-based aid such as Pell decreases in real value. The new

Academic Competitiveness Grants, for instance, require recipients to complete “a rigorous high

school program.” Many low income students don’t have the option of selecting their high school

and could be ineligible for this aid through no fault of their own. Similarly, the proposed PACE

Act provides four year competitive scholarships to students who obtain bachelors’ degrees in the

sciences, engineering or mathematics and concurrent certification as K-12 mathematics or

science teachers. These merit-based funds are to be awarded “on the basis of national

examinations”. In short, merit-based financial aid programs appear to help students who need

financial assistance least.”

Recommendation

“Establish a federal policy that makes need-based grants the primary aid for low income students and expand need-based grant opportunities.”

Based on her efforts, her capacity, her courage, we need more Mary L. Fifield to work in education in Boston Public School area. Not some people to identify the dilemma but to contribute on the struggle to position Elementary School and High School in a highest level.

Early Education

Early Education

Early education is the engine of children brain. When you start reading with your child as birth, the brain will inspire to receive and maintain words easier. On this principle, Sarah Mountcaslle and her co-worker Heloissa work so hard to help children to have a better orientation in education. “Raising A Reader” is a program for children from zero to five years old which Sarah is the coordinator, her office is located at Downtown right near the Park street T stop (9 B Hamilton place 3rd floor) Her email is sarah@raisingareaderma.org. This program is to help the parents read with their children as soon as possible. It is work with Day care, community child care, Teachers etc… When your child is participating, he or she will have a red bag with books every week. After a week, your child return the bag with the books to get another bag in order to order children can use them. This program was before in English and Heloissa translate in Portuguese. From now on, to help the Haitian Community read with their child, I help them as volunteer to translate all their documents in Haitian Creole which I already started. I already translate “The Parents Handout, which explains better how to enroll in this program and The Tips for Parents as the first child’s teacher. Five points of How to Share Books with your Child, The Brain’s Function, and Have you told a Story to your Child” It is very important to get early education with the children because education is life. Besides the office or the e-mail address, to get more orientation about where you can find this program in your area, you can contact Sarah at (617)292BOOk, she will be happy to guide you. In sum, give a chance to your child to have an educated beginning.

Education Success

Education is the beginning and the end of life. In order word, it is the best part of the real life. More deucated people in a country is equal more progress and a stable economy. As we can realize, the level of education in Boston public School declines at the lowest point. Many media, Principals and teachers claim for more money. However, money is not the major part of the solution to this situation. The boston Public School need a better structures and more materials on one hand, and incorporate other programs within the teaching procedure on the other hand. The Department of education's point of view is "No Child Left Behind". That's the reason my first suggestion is " The Private School and the Public School must have same program"  In a private School, the percentage in MCAS or the exam for Boston Latin is always better than the public school. Next, what I mean by including other program. Most of the children in public school do not know why they go to school? What are their values in the society? What they represent in the future of this country? That's the reason why tyhose children need the teachers to talk to them about human behaviour in the society, classification of job and prestige. In other word, include some sociology programs since elementary School. The teachers must play a role in children life to make them ambitious to succeed. They have to know since the beginning, they can work in nonskilled job area for reaching a better Education but not for life. When we imagine, who frequent public School? First, immigrants' children, children of the less educated people and  children of parents who work as unskilled job. Those categories of children sometimes raise by themselves because tyheir parents must have two unskilled jobs to makes and meet. According to me, I give the responsability to the teachers to wash their mind, to teach them to do better than their parents. It is very important sometimes for the teachers to separate boys and girls and do sexual Education. They have to know, have a child under age can affect all their life. Teach them about the effects of smoking and alcohool even their parents do that. In sum, it is the School's responsability to prepare and to send Chuildren in the community of less educated parents. When we reduce the number of children who drop school, when we eliminate the number of girls who get pregnant in High School, the public education will make a great step, there will be more student college and there will have an adjustable economy.

Education in Massachusetts

Education is one of the most difficult issue in Massachusetts. the problem start since Elementary school and High School. According to Michael Levenson, a Boston Globe's correspondence the problem is not a secret."Declining enrollment, an imbalance of resources and performance among schools, disappointing MCAS scores, lagging achievement among student of color including a troublesome drop in minority students at the city's elite exam school, Boston Latin." We can realize that students in Massachusetts are more likely drop school to work as a cashier in Mc Donald, Burger King or any other fast food place. Why? because they have more chance to get hire than an adult immigrant. Another issue, at the age of 16 they can take any decision they want and their parent cannot blame them. A few of them think school is for life when they reach High School and sometimes their parents do not have enough resources to pay a private college, as a result they struggle with a two years Community college and they have to work to help themselves. My daughter frequents Public School since she came to the United States, the first time she went to school she felt discriminated because of language. When she dropped the barrier of language, she met other problems in the midst of the other students. The problem as myself I realize, students in public School have to much time or they are neglected. When I test my daughter in writing or math, I realize that she needs a lot of improvement. However, her report card sometimes shows me the opposite. She went to take the exam for Boston Latin, her result gave an average of c+. However, her report card sometimes is better than that. To sum up, education in Massachusetts need to rethink from Elementary School. Accept children to work at the age of 16 is one of the problem the Government need to change because children cannot wait to reach this age to start punching. If they know they have to submit their High School diploma to work, they will make more efforts and maybe after High School they will have another way of thinking. This law must not be for immigrants, only for children who go to High School in the US. The Public School and The Private School must follow the same program, they must have the same rules and at this point we can trust when they say "No child left behind"

Financial Aid Need to Rethink

The education's way in the United States is the best choice to succeed in the real life. The Government does everything possible to help someone reach a better level of his or her choice. However, life is so expensive in the United States Massachusetts for instance that causes everybody particularly the single parents, forsake the education in order to help children to reach their goal. The Government disposes financial aid for some people who cannot afford the private college, nevertheless; that cannot help enough because the rules to get financial aid is incompatible to the real life. For example, you have an income limit for the year to get financial aid, even you earn a few dollars over the limit you won't get it. Nonetheless, the amount of dollars you earn over the limit sometimes cannot even pay one class at Bunker Hill which is a community College. For another example, you need to take full time classes to get financial aid, that means, it is become difficult to do your homework when you work full time in an unskilled job and the result sometimes is a failure. In addition, you can even live properly in Massachusetts with an unskilled full time job. United States is a country open for everybody in everything particularly Massachusetts, but this States is so expensive in everything that makes everybody needs help and that makes help become hard to find. That is the reason why it is easier to find help in education because not everybody runs after it. When you find financial aid as a single parent for example, other factors like rent become a barrier to forsake the education because you cannot work to much to get financial aid and you cannot live in a States like Massachusetts with the amount limit they ask you to earn to have it. I think the Government must include other factors in financial aid to help people who want to have a better education reach their goal.

God's Characters in Religion's World

As you learn, Religion is a part of a culture. Every people whatever their culture and language share religion as a common factor. Many religion throughout the world proclaim God, but different way. This difference give God many characters by the interpretation of some verses in the Bible. When you read "Sinners in the hand of an Angry God", the author submits the character of God upon the wicked, the non believers and the evil. He took some example from Genesis to Revelation to prove the angry character of God from the beginning until the end. When you read the narration "Whom I have to Choose" from Elizabeth Ashbridge, she presented another character of a faithful God. She used to prejudice the Christians before even talking to them, and became a preacher by the will of God. It is all the misunderstanding that we find in the Religion's World today, when somebody interprets a chapter or a verse different way from another, and that give God different character. If we take some times to visit the Religion's World, you will realize everybody proclaim the same God and sometimes they use the same Bible. However, when we analyze their studies, we can ask ourselves how many Gods exist? To understand the true character of God, they should have only two Religions:"The Catholic and the Protestant". But today, if we make a survey, the result will give many Religions:"The Catholic and the Protestants." All educated people know there was a Jesus 2000 years ago. Jesus walked with many believers at that time because the character he gave to God was in him. Today, it is very difficult to make an educated man or woman has faith in Christ because sometimes the preacher who talks about Christ does not has Christ's character. The true character of God is not in Religion's World but in human.

Share the Education

Education is the best tool people need for a better life. The remark it is, a country poor in resources is always poor in education. America and many other countries are always ready to help poor countries in health, in infrastructures etc... However; those kind of help are always a beginning but nobody knows where they will end. When there is a natural disaster in a poor country, many million dollars send for help. But; why those kind of countries cannot face the problem by themselves? Because they do not prepare for that. As a saying is: "If you give me a fish you feed me for one day, if you show me how to catch the fish you feed me for life" For example, America is a country of a high level of education, Even the homeless people knows how to read and write. I think if the help provide fro Haiti is shared by invest a part in education, one day a new generation will know how to deal with many problems. One day, a new generation will know how, where, and when to invest to increase their economy. Haiti can change if it find the help that it really need. This Generation in Haiti need help at the same time prepare another generation to increase their educative capacity.

Zip it up!

In all societies, Homosexuality was considered as an immoral and corrupt act. This kind of same sex attractive was included in each social class. However: it was not openly share between people of every society. Now a day; the attraction to the same sex become a common factor, particularly in American culture. After 2000 from now, you can imagine how proud someone facing the society to announce his or her consideration homosexual. The percentage grow up very fast in American society, it's like they are some people who was afraid to be, and getting out after being recognized legal. Since the State of Vermont legalized same sex marriage in July 2000, it was like a new discovery in the US and later on Massachusetts follow up. From now on; you can realize it's one of the common program on TV at any day and any time. Even children in Elementary School involve in that subject. The interaction with homosexual in our society is fairly normal, every body keep their prejudice sentiment inside. Besides; they are part in the American society, they are every where and they have all the degrees the society need. Nobody cannot denied them, because it's start to be a law in American society. sooner or later most of the States will legalized same sex marriage. Nonetheless; it will be always a broken-heart for the homophobia. They will exercise an hidden prejudice afraid to fall under the law. Everything that become a law, if you do not accept, just ZIP IT UP!

Black American or African-American

The concept of Race is a group of people with physical characteristic that distinguish it from another group. this idea is related most of the times to negative point of view. First, human think one race is superior to another. In fact, that doesn't exist because all race has their genius and their idiots. There is sometimes the category that believe of the superiority is more powerful and economically dense. that's the reason why the inferiority belief is attributed to the black people because they are weak economically and no powerful. Second, human think a pure race exist. The fact there is a different skin color, hair texture, nose shape, eyes color, head shape and so on; can not make a difference until to hate one another or think one is pure than the other. This awful idea existed many decades ago. unfortunately, we live in the 21 century and the human heart. If you listened to Rush Limbaugh "77 WABC New York, he made some terrible declaration after Haiti earthquake against Obama's help because it is a black country. It is only the declaration of the human right that's decrease the hate and the violence between race. Even at this moment we still live this difference in America. Black American don't have the same regard than the other nations. Sometimes some of them behave very awful but that doesn't mean we can stereotype all race as same for a group of people. They have some people who play a great part ion the American society for example Eddy Murphy, Michael Jordan, Bill Cosby... Today the great Obama example shows there is no difference between Race. America give everybody the opportunity, whoever wants will succeed whatever their race.

Women yesterday, today and tomorrow

Since many years ago, women was considered as second place in the society behind the men. You could even realize in the past, the women function was limited as housekeepers or raising the children. However; just a few years ago, women climb successfully step by step the ladder of the society a battle for the equality between men. In many countries around the world, particularly in America, women exceed the level. In addition, in many institution private or public, there are at least five percent of women in the management. You can even hope to meet many of them as principal in the public school. Women in America are very open, and very confident they believe in education and success. That is the reason why, remarkably, women in America are deputies, Senators etc... they even try to run for President, why not? they deserve that! besides, they are in majority in our society. It is very difficult to find their enthusiastic confident among women in another country. To be clearly, some country has limited job and limited in education, women have become limited and depend on men. In America, in each major there is always men and women. You never enter a classroom in a college and find only men in there. Why most of the time, there is always a men first and a women after? The answer is: most of the time it is not a success but a choice. Let us take another example, nobody trust John Mc Cain because he was in Bush' administration, that is the reason why Obama become President. Who would probably become President if it was Mc Cain, Hilary Clinton and The independent candidate. Fortunately, even in a few words the President Obama think about this problem by saying: "We're going to crack down on violations of equal pay laws...so that women get equal pay for an equal day's work" Discrimination against women does not need to abolish by law but by everybody consent. It is time to let women feel proud of themselves for their efforts.

Hyphened Americans

When we make a retrospective outline of the American History, we will emphasize a lot of culture and improvement. indeed; we can realize this land was colonized by four different nations, that means four different culture and four different thought. The colonials periods was marked by Spanish, French, Dutch and British. To be more precise, colonization brought always anarchy include rape and sometimes true love. Moreover; there was always new born between colonizer and the country under colonization. From 1776 to 1789, marked the formation periodic of the United States. This land that was already occupied by different culture and tendency, became an open gate to immigrants. That people, who believed in natural freedom gave the possibility to everybody to become a part of them. In addition; their well organized Government give the possibility to accept to be a part even you know by your blood it is not. Furthermore; at the end of the twentieth century until today, American is considered as water that means all over the nations. To summarize; we can meet a Chinese, an Haitian, an Italian etc.. We have always tendency to ask them where they are coming from, and sometimes the answer is a surprise, I was born here that means Americans. To be clearly, I am Haitian-American with a hyphen between the origin and the adopted.
